Interns will have opportunities to practice in the following areas: Information systems (ArcGIS and Cartegraph), Stormwater pond inventory, Shapefile (.shp) creation and database management, Cartography, Project management and communication, and Natural Resources management.

Accountable To: Public Works Superintendent
Salary Grade: $12.00/hr

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, this position is responsible for assisting with GIS related tasks.

Scope of Responsibility:

Work is completed in the field in outdoor conditions with exposure to the elements and in an office setting. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent. Interns will have opportunities to practice in the following areas:

  • Information systems software (ArcGIS and Cartegraph)
  • Shapefile (.shp) creation and database management
  • Cartography
  • Project management and communication
  • Data Acquisition and infrastructure inventory
  • Other duties or responsibilities as apparent, directed, or required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • One year experience with ArcView, ArcInfo, ArcGIS Server and/or other ESRI GIS products with general knowledge of surveying, mapping, and GPS functionality.
  • Ability to proficiently operate GIS systems.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and establish good relations with co-workers, program users, and the public at large.
  • Ability to stay focused and multi-task.
  • Must have valid driver's license with driving record acceptable to the City.
  • Must be a university student, enrolled in good standing in a geography or GIS program.
  • Preference is given to students with a high GPA, strong interest in water resources, and returning interns in good standing.
